I am a Commerce graduate who got into film-making (Photography) after Graduation purely out of Interest.. I did a two yr course to understand the basics of Film-making and Photography.. After my course i ve been assisting Film-makers and Cinematographers in different projects for 2 yrs now.. I am not getting used to the life style, Inconsistent & non-paying-career prospects and lack of opportunities to make Independent projects.. I am now thinking of doing my long-due-MBA and get into an MN C .. As i’ve specialized in Marketing during my Undergraduate days .. I am now interested in subjects like Brand Management, Marketing Strategy Building, Integrated Marketing Communications or an MBA where i can specialize in Marketing ..
How would Business schools Validate my application since i am making a career shift ? Even if Business schools see me as a Non-traditional Student, How much would MN C’s Consider my CV if i apply for a job after my MBA program considering the fact that i’ve been freelancing for 2 yrs n have no professional work experience ? Business schools in UK, USA and Canada ask for 2-3yrs of Managerial Work experience.. How do i go about getting an admission for the general MBA program ? Please Advice ??
Thanks for all your valuable contributions friends .. Well my score are as follows ..
10 Std : 73% [2000]
12 Std : 88% ( Commerce & Accountancy ) [2002]
B.COM : 58%
[2002-2005] ( Low scores due to diverse interests n lot of participation in Extra curricular activities .. I also wanted to appear for a re-test n score better, but since my college is semester basis .. Couldn’t do much )
Diploma in Film Making ( Certificate Course, So no mark system ) [ 2005-2007 ]
I ve also made a few short films which has won a few awards and also screened in the Berlin International Film Festival ..
@ Biker : I’ve also been reading about a lot about Non-Traditional Students in B-Schools .. Can i apply with this 2 years of Non-traditional work experience cause in a way i ve been assisting Cinematographers for the last two yrs .. Which is a bit of a supervising job .. Will that count as Non-traditional work experience ? I’ve also read about Ex-Army officials making it into B-schools ..
Can anyone suggest me some good universities for an MBA in London, Dubai, Canada and Singapore, which would suit my profile .. I want to pursue an MBA from a familiar University rather than an unrecognized one .. Pls feel free to give any kind of related information ? I am sure it’ll help me a lot .. Thanks in Advance ..
MBA entrance into the top ranking B-schools in India is based more on the tests (CAT, MAT etc) than on your CV. For abroad, MBA admission is based more on GRE/GMAT. After clearing the test, if you get through Group Discussion well, then your work experience will add value in the interview. Your job switches won’t matter much. You have a background with which you will be able to impress upon the interviewers that you are confident, experienced and mature.
You will get a job based on your performance in MBA+previous education + previous experience. It’s a combination of all these. I would say that you must not worry about placements now but focus on the preparation for the MBA entrance test.

the minimum eligibility in India is a graduation degree and also on your marks in the entrance exams viz., CAT.
if schools in UK etc., are asking for 2-3 managerial experience, then it would be difficult for you to get into those schools, but they also require 16 years of study, while we have only 15 years till graduation here, and hence most students complete their mba or masters in India and then go for MBA abroad, and most schools take students with 16 years studies, without any experience too… You need to locate such schools, but you also need to complete a masters degree.
instead, you can give your CAT this year, and then get an admission in India itself, from top b-school, and then after you mba you can join an entertainment industry for marketing etc., posts, so that you are also in touch with your passion, and may be when an opportunity comes you can try your hands in photography etc., as a passion.
in India, IIMs and other institutes are mostly concerned with your graduation and entrance exam marks, so completing your mba here would be much more logical

hi there,
March 11, 2010, 10:12 amIt is a good idea to look at USA for an MBA simply because work is available easily for 20 hours per week while you study. In any case 80% of the multinational companies worldwide are american. you will need to take a GMAT and TOEFL as your first step. Your work experience and concerns about career shift etc. come later and are handled at the documentation level. I am aware of all this because my cousins have gone to US through this company called Career Makers. Their website is http://www.careermakers.net

Why not complete your MBA in Dubai or India? The institutes there are very interested of your graduation and of course, your entrance exam grades.
